On the ice for his Eastview Bantam AA team, Patrick Schoonover was a leader, defender and excellent teammate. Off the ice, he was a leader, defender, excellent friend and classmate, loving brother and son.
In recognition of the way he led his life, Let’s Play Hockey and the Minnesota Wild are proud to present the Patrick Schoonover Award, an annual award that will be given to the Minnesota PeeWee or Bantam hockey player who best exemplifies Patrick’s ideals of hard work, high character, loyalty, honesty, humor and athletic achievement.
Nominations will be made by youth hockey coaches and parents, with the winner selected by Let’s Play Hockey staff and the Schoonover family. The winner of the inaugural Patrick Schoonover Award will be presented at the Boys’ High School Hockey State Tournament Banquet in March at Roy Wilkins Auditorium. The winner and the Schoonover family will make the “Let’s Play Hockey” announcement at a Minnesota Wild game, and a permanent display for the award will be installed at Xcel Energy Center.
“We would like to thank Let’s Play Hockey and the Minnesota Wild for honoring our son bycreating this award in his name to recognize a youth hockey player who shares the same qualities as Patrick – a good teammate, friend and leader. One who works hard, has fun, and is determined to be better both on and off the ice,” the Schoonover family said. “Patrick loved everything about the game – practices, games, competition, tournaments, knee hockey, playing on the pond and the everlasting friendships he made with coaches, teammates and other players. We miss him dearly and are heartbroken to know he will never get to fulfill his dream of making it to the NHL. We are comforted and honored that he will always be remembered and recognized through the Patrick Schoonover Award.”
“We’re proud to present an award that will celebrate the life of Patrick Schoonover, and what he stood for,” Let’s Play Hockey publisher Doug Johnson said. “The Minnesota youth hockey community is blessed with numerous players like Patrick who love hockey, respect the game and serve as leaders both on and off the ice. The Patrick Schoonover Award will recognize one of those deserving players.”
“We are proud to support the Patrick Schoonover Award to honor his legacy as a hockey player who displayed great character as a teammate on and off the ice,” Minnesota Wild Chief Operating Officer Matt Majka said. “It’s a meaningful way that we can pay tribute to Patrick’s life and recognize other players who are making a positive impact in the State of Hockey.”
