As preparations continue for the 10th Annual Wells Fargo Hockey Day Minnesota on Saturday, Feb. 6 in Duluth, it was announced today that the Duluth Northern Stars girls’ high school hockey team will break in the ice sheet with a regular-season game against the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton Lumberjacks on Thursday, Jan. 21 at 7 p.m. at the St. Luke’s Orthopedics and Sports Medicine outdoor rink at Bayfront Festival Park. Duluth Northern Stars is comprised of players from both Duluth East and Denfeld High Schools. Admission to the game is free.
The outdoor rink at Bayfront Park will see plenty more action leading up to Wells Fargo Hockey Day Minnesota 2016. On Friday, Feb. 5, the rink will host junior varsity action between Hockey Day Minnesota-participating high schools; Duluth East will take on Lakeville North at 1 p.m., and Duluth Denfeld will face Eveleth-Gilbert at 3 p.m. Practices for teams participating in the Feb. 6 event are also scheduled for early morning on Friday, Feb. 5. Admission is free for both games and practices.
Community members can experience the outdoor rink and skate with the Duluth East Greyhounds from 2 – 3 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 24. A public skate with the Denfeld Hunters will take place from 4:30-6:30 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 31. Limited warming house space is available.
Each of the youth teams from local area hockey programs will also have an opportunity to enjoy the iconic hockey rink on the shores of Lake Superior starting Friday, Jan. 22. Program members should check with their rink director for details. Lead local event sponsors will each have scheduled rink use as well.
Details about exciting day-of activities, including a parade, post-event party and Duluth hockey heritage honorees will be released next week.
Costs to produce the event are fully supported through sponsorships and in-kind donations. Nonfinancial partnerships with the City of Duluth and the DECC have provided site planning and infrastructure knowledge and support. All local Hockey Day Minnesota efforts are led by the Duluth Local Organizing Committee.
Hockey Day Minnesota was originated in 2007 by the Minnesota Wild to celebrate the game that has made Minnesota the State of Hockey. It is produced in partnership with FOX Sports North, Minnesota Hockey and the respective local community that serves as host each year. Tickets for Wells Fargo Hockey Day Minnesota 2016 in Duluth are on sale now. Proceeds from the event will benefit Duluth area youth hockey programs.
