Numbers Game: Mikko Koivu

by Staff Writer / Minnesota Wild
The Minnesota Wild and General Manager Chuck Fletcher will be playing the numbers game this summer. Whether it be signing, trading, drafting inviting or cutting, Fletcher has to put together a roster of salaries that fit under the NHL's salary cap. The players that make up that roster will be asked to put up big numbers in order for the club to have a successful season in Year X.

The 2010-2011 version of the Wild will start to take some shape later this month with the NHL Entry Draft, followed closely by free agency. Before that happens, let's take a look at some of the numbers by players that will likely be a part of Year X. Today, we look at the Wild's first-ever permanent captain: Mikko Koivu.

159. . . Games that Koivu played in the last two seasons out of a possible 164.

14. . . Number of assists Mikko needs to catch Pierre-Marc Bouchard for second place on the franchise's all-time assist chart

20. . . Multi-point games recorded by Koivu last season; eight more than Martin Havlat, who had the second-highest total.

-2. . . Koivu's 2009-10 plus/minus ranking, which was his lowest since his rookie season in 2004-05.

T-6th. . .  The captain's rank in NHL shootout goals (20) since shootouts were instituted in the NHL in 2005.

864. . .  Faceoffs won by the first-line center, ranking second in the NHL.
