Minnesota Wild prospect Mario Lucia
has had a good run since returning to action from a broken leg, suffered during preseason training at the University of Notre Dame.
Earlier today, Lucia and Team USA beat Canada, 5-1, advancing to the gold-medal game of the IIHF World Junior Championship in Ufa, Russia.
Adding a cherry on top of Lucia’s day, the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) named the Notre Dame freshman the CCHA Gongshow Rookie of the Month for December.
In four games for the Fighting Irish, Lucia recorded three goals and seven points, helping Notre Dame to a 4-0-0 record. The Plymouth, Minn., resident recorded points in all four games during December, including three multi-point games, and earned a plus-4 rating.
With the Irish, he is riding a five-game point streak, posting four goals and eight points. During the month of December, he was selected as the Gongshow Rookie of the Week twice (Dec. 3 and Dec. 10).
The Wild’s second-round pick in the 2011 Draft picked up a pair of goals on Dec. 1 against Lake Superior, the first two-goal game of his career. Lucia followed that performance with a goal and an assist in a 3-2 win against Michigan State on Dec. 7, earning Perani Cup first-star honors. The following night, he tallied an assist against the Spartans in a 5-1 win. The 6-foot-3, 193-pound forward finished the month at Bowling Green on Dec. 15, collecting two assists in a 4-1 win over the Falcons.
