Holla State of Hockey legion! Welcome to live in-game commentary, here on your favorite website for all things Wild, Wild.com.
Speaking of wild, I am coming to you live from my perch in the Al Shaver Press Box, which is inside Xcel Energy Center, which is where there is a 1,000 pound animal with horns that could pierce an organ running loose. Well, he's not exactly running loose, but TC the Bull is plodding about in the Gate One lobby right now. TC the Bull is the Goodwill Ambassador for the World's Toughest Rodeo (which will be here this weekend) since he was just a bull calf. He was here last year and actually relieved himself (the serious kind) in one of the elevators. But we still love him, and we're happy to have him back, because we need all the brute strength we can get when the Wild takes on the Detroit Red Wings.
I think the saying goes, "if you mess with the bull, you get the horns." Well, tonight, the bull is TC the Bull, and the horns come in the form of Josh Harding
, tonight's starting goaltender for your Minnesota Wild. Thus, the mystery is solved of who tonight's starter would be, and I have to tell you, every single person around the rink today had their own theories about who the starter would be. I knew it all along, as you can tell if you read today's "View from the Lighthouse" blog. Never a doubt.
As for the lineup, John Scott is going to be the only healthy scratch tonight. Derek Boogaard is out because of a sore hammy. Chuck Kobasew (knee), Clayton Stoner
(groin) and Pierre-Marc Bouchard
(concussion) are all out.
As for attire, the Wild will wear the dazzling home reds for this one. The Red Wings are going with the classic road whites trimmed in red with the flying Goodyear on the chest.
Mallory Weggeman, the 2009 Disabled Athlete of the Year, gets us going with tonight's Let's Play Hockey declaration. I see no reason for debate, lets get down to brass tacks.Period 1
19:44 - Quick chance right away for the good guys. Andrew Brunette, the star of the Wild.com Skills Competition video, wins the battle for the puck behind the Detroit net. He quickly feeds one out front for Mikko Koivu
, whose bid is thwarted by Chris Osgood.17:06 - MIN 1 - DET 0 - That's how you set up a power play goal for the man they call "Mittens." The Wild's PP unit works the puck around exactly how Todd Richards would draw it up on the ol' chalkboard. Koivu has the puck up high and he dishes down low to Brunette. Bruno quickly gets rid of it to the high slot where Antti Miettinen whacks the puck into a yawning goal mouth. That start is much more welcome after the last one against the Wings when we had to watch Todd Bertuzzi score on a breakaway.
15:52 - Wings defenseman Brad Stuart takes a Wild dump-in right off the face. The puck bounces off his mug and bounces right to a cutting Andrew Ebbett, but the former Michigan Wolverine is robbed by the glove of Osgood. 15:14 - MIN 1 - DET 1 - The Wings have a quick answer. A Niklas Lidstrom slap shot from the point drills Marek Zidlicky in the leg. Zid goes down in a heap, and Pavel Datsyuk gets the puck at the side of the net and shovels in a backhand.
3:13 - MIN 2 - DET 1 - If your hands are warm, you must be wearing "Mittens." Once again, it's Bruno fighting along the backboards for the puck and dishing it to the side for Miettinen. He quickly one-times his shot from close range and roofs it over Osgood from a sharp angle. Dare we call a Mittens hatty tonight?
2:46 - MIN 2 - DET 2 - It's the Antti Miettinen vs. Pavel Datsyuk showdown. Whenever Mittens puts one in, Datsyuk as the answer. He puts a perfect deflection on a shot from the point by Lidstrom and it rings off the post and goes in. Harding doesn't have a prayer, and the Wild should probably try to enjoy one of these leads.
2:20 - MIN 3 - DET 2 - After 10 minutes of nothing, we've got a lot of something. The Wild comes right back, and grabs the lead again. With both Robbie Earl and Andrew Ebbett in front, Greg Zanon tees one up from the blueline. His low-flying missile hits off of Ebbett and clanks off the back iron before popping right back out into play. A couple players keep on playing, but Ebbett is pumping his fist like he's dancing at a Jersey Shore nightclub. He's doing it for good reason. That puck is in as a very short video review confirms.
0:00 - How about that? The Wild held their current lead for more than two minutes. Now, the boys will have a whole intermission to talk about padding that lead.Period 2
17:26 - The second period opens with a frantic pace, much like the first ended. Guillaume Latendresse
leads a rush and whistles a heavy wrist shot off the shoulder of Osgood. G-Lat keeps his head of steam going toward the net and nearly pokes in the rebound but pushes it just wide.
13:24 - Brodziak finds G-Lat alone in front off a two-on-one. Latendresse catches the pass and makes a move to the backhand, trying to slide one through the wickets. Osgood stops that one, and then lucks out as Brodzy follows up on the play and punches the rebound just inches wide.
10:55 - As a puck his lofted high through the neutral zone, Brodzial viciously collides with former Michigan State Spartan Justin Abdelkader and goes down hard. He holds his head on the ice for a tick, but then he gets up and gets off on his own power.
10:17 - Harding's best friend, his right post, comes up big for him here. After stopping Kris Draper's rocket slapper, Harding kicks a rebound right to former Boston College Eagle Patrick Eaves. He chips it directly off the post, and Harding is able to keep that rebound from entering the net.
6:11 - A great job of penalty killing here by Mr. Cal Clutterbuck
. First, he deftly rings the puck around the boards in his own zone and gets it down to the Detroit zone. Then, as the Wings try to come out of their zone, he steals the pass at the blueline and chips it in deep to effectively kill the Zidlicky minor.
2:25 - Would you believe me if I told you that Bertuzzi is unhappy with an interference call that goes against him? I know! It's crazy, right? The guy is such a happy-go-lucky feller. It's shocking to see him with a sour-puss look on his face as he glares at the ref on his way to the box.Period 3
17:39 - It's been a rough night for Zidlicky tonight. He's taken a slapper off his leg, and he's taken both penalties for the Wild tonight. He gets whistled for hooking here, giving Detroit an important power play early in the third.
16:55 - I would not want to be Daniel Cleary right now. Not only does he negate the Detroit power play by getting whistled for highsticking, but the guy he whacks in the face is Koivu, who is very angry. You do not want to make Koivu angry.16:18 - MIN 4 - DET 2 - Sound that foghorn and keep it blaring! During some four-on-four action, Eric Belanger makes a sweet toe drag move at the Detroit blueline to get around a defender. He then sends a perfect cross-ice pass to fellow French-Canadian Latendresse, and he makes no mistake by blasting the one-timer past a sprawling Osgood.
15:07 - MIN 5 - DET 2 - Oh it's just so pretty to watch! On the power play, Koivu glides down the right side with the puck, and patiently waiting out the Wings defenders, he then zips a pass over to a wide open Havlat, and from a shallow angle, he banks in his 10th of the season.
14:29 - You remember Brad May, correct? He's the guy that sucker-punched Wild enforcer Kim Johnsson back in the day. Right now, he is hell bent on trying to fight Clutterbuck. Clutter is having none of that nonsense, but May keeps trying to goad him into one. The Sherrif Shane Hnidy and Brodziak step into have a few words with May, and Brodzy lands a couple gloves to his face. Nice.
9:03 - The Bruno-Mittens connection nearly adds one more. Guess where Brunette is when he fires a pass to Miettinen. If you said "behind the net" you are a great hockey mind. He dishes out front to the friendly Finn, who can't get great wood on his shot while being stick-checked. He does put his hat trick bid on goal, but Osgood lays the pad out there for the stop.
6:08 - Just seconds after Abdelkader takes a run at Earl and sends him to the ice, James Sheppard drills May into the boards. May responds by hooking Shepp to the ice, and that's going to draw a penalty and bring out the Wild power play unit, which has looked great tonight, and features Miettinen, who just might start raining baseball caps here.
0:42.2 - With the game decided the Wings are trying to send a message. Kirk Maltby destroys Ebbett in front of the penalty boxes with a huge hit.
0:00 - A solid end to a solid homestand as the Wild pulls five out of six points at home and now faces a huge three-game road trip starting tomorrow in Colorado. What's say we do this again in about 24 hours?
