Flashback Friday: Mikko Koivu's 500th Point

by Mike Doyle / Minnesota Wild
Empty net goals are not often very memorable over the course of a season. However, Jason Zucker’s empty net goal against the Nashville Predators on April 9, 2015 will go down in the record books because it also marked a career milestone for one of the Minnesota Wild’s all-time greats.

Wild Captain Mikko Koivu picked up an assist on the tally, marking his 500th career point. He becomes the first Minnesota player to pick up 500 career points while in a Wild sweater. He’s the franchise’s all-time leading scorer and holds a number of club records.

Known as a two-way center, of course the goal starts with a typical Koivu play. The Finn starts the rush by making a strong defensive effort with the Preds pressuring, and then winning a puck battle to chip the biscuit to Chris Stewart. The wing then headman’s the puck to Zucker, who is off to the races and fires it into the empty net.
