Fantasy Spotlight: MIN at SJ

by Carly Peters / Minnesota Wild

Fantasy Pick: Matt Cullen

Matt Cullen joined the Wild this summer and entered his first season in Minnesota surrounded by the fanfare that's expected of a home-state kid joining the big club. Perhaps that was the reason his start to the season was so impressive: he flourished and was a power-play automatic weapon despite the pressures and expectations of being the team's big off-season signing.

Fast forward a few months, and the Moorhead native's game cooled - no player in the NHL could be expected to keep that pace in such a tough League. As Cullen started going more and more games between points, he showcased his knowledge as a League veteran: saying he couldn't be hard on himself, that staying on even keel and continuing to work hard would make the points return.

Give another point to the "veteran" title, because Cullen was dead on. After tallying an assist in the Wild's win in Calgary, he now has points in three straight games (2-3=5), his longest streak since a four-game stretch (2-5=7) in October.

Cullen has totaled 29 points (10-19=29) in 44 games this season and leads the Wild with a 54.4% faceoff percentage, and is tied for the NHL lead with three shorthanded goals. Going into tonight's game in San Jose, Cullen owns 16 points (9-7=16) in 35 matches against the Sharks.
