The Houston Aeros won a pair of close weekend games to improve its record to 9-6-1-2, ranking third in the South Division.
On Friday, the Aeros skated to a tight road victory against interstate rival the San Antonio Rampage, 2-1. Right wing Justin Fontaine led the Aeros, scoring the eventual game-winning goal with 2:13 left in regulation for the win and his sixth goal on the year. Forward Zack Phillips and defenseman Chay Genoway each had an assist on the game-winning goal.
Fontaine also set up Houston’s first goal of the game, scored by Jason Zucker. The power play goal was Zucker’s eight of the year. Defenseman Brian Connelly added an assist on the play.
Goaltender Matt Hackett stopped 25 of 26 Rampage shots securing the victory and his fifth win on the year. For the Aeros.com game recap, click here.
The Aeros beat the Abbotsford Heat in dramatic fashion, 3-2 in overtime, on Sunday.
Zucker continued his hot play, scoring the winner only five seconds into the extra frame. The tally tied an AHL record for fastest overtime goal. The former Denver Pioneer leads the team in goals, with nine. Johan Larsson assisted on the goal.
Also adding to his team leading point total, Fontaine tallied a goal and assists (7-10=17). Forward David McIntyre scored his fifth goal of the season in the second period with assists going to Fontaine and Nick Palmieri.
Hackett moved a game over .500 (6-5-2) with 18 saves on 20 shots to beat the AHL’s top team. The Aeros recap can be found, here.
