2014 Top Plays Tournament - Semifinal Winners

by Mike Doyle / Minnesota Wild

After each week during the regular season,, along with our friends from Dairy Queen, asked fans to pick the Top Play from each week. So how do we figure out the best of the best? A fan vote in a winner-take-all-style tournament bracket. Well, after collecting two days of votes from you the fans, the Semifinal results are in with the the final two plays remaining to fight for the title of Top Play of the Year. Check out a PDF of the updated bracket, here. The Final voting will open on Monday, June 23.

Here are the results of the Semifinals (percentage of votes in parenthesis):

Koivu’s Tic-Tap-Tip-in (50.94) defeats Granny To Pommer

This vote was closer than Florida’s presidential election in 2000, but unlike in the Sunshine State, there’s no hanging chads in the Top Plays of the Week Tournament. Six votes is all that separated Koivu’s Tic-Tap-Tip-in and Granny To Pommer, many coming in the final minutes of voting. Despite not having a bracket named after him this year, Mikko Koivu is in on both of the plays meeting in the finals…

OMParise (66.24 percent) defeats Kuemper Denies

This season, the winner will be all about teamwork. The goaltender is considered by many to be the most important player on a hockey team, but in the year-end Top Plays Tournament it looks like voters are more impressed by a pretty play. Zach Parise’s tap in against the Calgary Flames after a spectacular set up by Mikko Koivu and Ryan Suter easily moves past Darcy Kuemper’s individual effort against the Vancouver Canucks.
