2014 Top Plays Tournament - Round 2 Winners

by Mike Doyle / Minnesota Wild

After each week during the regular season,, along with our friends from Dairy Queen, asked fans to pick the Top Play from each week. So how do we figure out the best of the best? A fan vote in a winner-take-all-style tournament bracket. Well, after collecting two days of votes from you the fans, the Round 2 results are in with eight teams remaining to fight for the title of Top Play of the Year. Check out a PDF of the updated bracket, here. The Quarterfinal voting will open on Monday, June 9.

Here are the results of Round 2 (percentage of votes in parenthesis):

Koivu’s Tic-Tap-Tip-in (72.85) defeats Granlund’s Backhand Finnish

Suter’s Hatty (53.8) defeats Granny’s Slick Play

Well, the regular season’s top vote getter, Granlund’s Backhand Finnish, was rolled by the largest margin in Round 2 by Koivu’s Tic-Tap-Tip-in. While the second-year Finn might’ve been bounced from his own bracket, he does help set up his countryman’s goal, so his presence is not totally erased from the Tourney. However, he will have to wait until next season to take home the ultimate prize of Top Play of the Year. The only blueliner left in the tournament, Suter’s Hatty edged Granny’s Slick Play. Wild fans, it appears, has an affinity for plays made by cagey vets.

Pretty Passing To Pominville (62.44) defeats Parise To Pommer

Granny To Pommer (67.43) defeats Prosser’s HDM Winner

Jason Pominville is a finisher, leading the Wild in goals this season. He also led the tournament on plays entered, so it’s no surprise that he has two plays in his bracket still remaining. Up first, the team effort of Pretty Passing To Pominville topped Zach Parise’s individual effort to set up Parise to Pommer. Granny To Pommer turns the clock to midnight on the Cinderella play of the tourney, Prosser’s HDM Winner.

OMParise (65.91) defeats Parise Ties Papa

Nin-OT (53.57) defeats Nino’s Shootout Winner

It looks like a trend is developing in the Top Plays Tournament: Wild fans like teamwork more than Flint from GI Joe. With that in mind, the precision passing of OMParise easily moves past Parise Ties Papa (maybe State of Hockey fans have a soft spot for JP?). In the lower half of the bracket, Nin-OT wins by the slimmest of margins in Round 2 over Nino’s Shootout Winner. We’re proud of you Wild fans for picking an overtime winner over a skills competition winner, even if it was only by a handful of votes. This bracket’s Quarterfinal matchup might also be called the battle of the coolest play name.

Bryz Paddle Down (57.14) defeats Kuemper’s Tippy Toe

Kuemper Denies (54.3) defeats Hard Save

Bryz Paddle Down slices Kuemper’s Tippy Toe like the Nihilists in The Big Lebowski. Walter must’ve gotten Kuemper a toe by 3 o’clock, because Kuemper Denies stops Hard Save to advance. These goaltenders are not amateurs, dude.
