The Minnesota Lions Vision Foundation works to help the blind and visually impaired. Through support of the Minnesota Lions Eye Bank, collaboration with the University of Minnesota's Lions Children's Eye Clinic and Lions Macular Degeneration Center, and work collecting and distributing used eyeglasses, the Foundation helps countless people every day.
The Minnesota Lions Vision Foundation is more than 57 years old and still going strong! Initially formed to establish and fund the Minnesota Lions Eye Bank, the foundation now supports many vision-related initiatives, awarding more than $300,000 in grants each year.
The foundation began in 1957, when a Minnesota Lions club member demonstrated to his fellow Lions the great need for an eye bank in the state. Minnesota Lions unanimously supported an eye bank resolution at their annual meeting in June 1960, and the Minnesota Lions Eye Bank was born. Since then, the Minnesota Lions Eye Bank has helped make possible more than 30,000 corneal transplants and is one of the largest providers of eye tissue for research and education in the United States.
But the eye bank was just the beginning of many successful endeavors championed by the Vision Foundation. One of the most heartwarming is the Lions Children's Eye Clinic.
Founded in 1968, the Children's Eye Clinic is a partnership between the Minnesota Lions and the University of Minnesota. Pediatric patients with the most serious and complicated eye conditions are seen at the Lions Children's Eye Clinic. From infants born with cataracts or cloudy corneas to children with lazy or crossed eyes to babies, kids, and young adults suffering from ocular cancer, the eye doctors at the Lions Children's Eye Clinic offer compassionate and expert care. The Lions Children's Eye Clinic is one of the largest and best-staffed clinic of its kind in the country, treating more than 8,000 children each year.
The Minnesota Lions Vision Foundation is supported by donations from Lions Clubs across the state of Minnesota. Lion's members raise money by holding pancake breakfasts, spaghetti and steak feeds, raffles, garage sales, craft fairs, walks and runs, holiday events, and so much more. Please support the Lions in your local communities. Where there is a need, there is a Lion!
