Recapping last season

Glendening had a normal season in terms of offensive production, as he tallied 15 points (six goals and nine assists) in 54 games for an average points per game of 0.28. He was at 0.15 in 2019-20, 0.29 in 2018-19 and 0.28 in 2016-17, so he's not going to be a big producer. He was tied for the team lead in plus-minus with the Red Wings at plus-3, but was 27th in SAT (shot attempt differential at even strength) at minus-139. Glendening averaged 14:48 in ice time, which is normal for his career.

Going forward

Glendening is an experienced fourth line center who can win draws, be strong defensively and make few mistakes. That said, he was in the top 10 in many creating categories for Detroit at 5-on-5 last season, according to Natural Stat Trick. Glendening was eighth in shots on goal at 61, fifth in scoring chances with 61, and third in high danger scoring chances at 34. He is a low-risk player and had 10 takeaways and just seven giveaways last season. In addition, he was third on the Red Wings in blocked shots at 41 and fifth in hits at 60. Glendening led all Detroit players (defensemen included) in average shorthanded time on ice per game at 2:25, so he should be a big part of the Stars' penalty kill this season. After nine years with the Red Wings organization, this will be the first season the Michigan native will be playing on a new team. So, like Joe Pavelski and Corey Perry before him, there could be some transition during the first half of the year. Still, he has a lot of attributes that the Stars' coaching staff values, and he likely will find a way to get plenty of minutes.
