The Dallas Stars recalled forward Valeri Nichushkin from his conditioning assignment in the AHL and Nichushkin was on the ice for Thursday morning’s practice in Frisco.
Nichushkin skated on the fourth line with Travis Moen and Colton Sceviour. The 19-year-old will get in at least one game with Dallas weekend, maybe two. The Stars host St. Louis Friday and play at Nashville on Saturday.
“He’s real excited to be back playing. To be back here and have the opportunity to play, he is real excited,” Stars coach Lindy Ruff said. “He is definitely going to play one, and he could play both.”
Nichushkin played three games with Texas. It was his first game action since going out in November with a hip injury that required surgery. He picked up three assist in the three games. All the assists came in Texas’ 7-4 win over Adirondack at Cedar Park Center Wednesday night.
“He felt last night was a bit of a crazy game,” Ruff said. “The information I got is that he skated well. Some ups and downs in the game but there are ups and downs in every game.”
Stars center Shawn Horcoff did not practice Thursday, which is why Sceviour centered the fourth line. Horcoff is sick. The Stars will wait and see how Horcoff is doing Friday.
“His status for tomorrow will be determined when he comes in,” Ruff said.
Defenseman Jordie Benn, who has missed the past two games with a back issue and did not practice Wednesday, went through a full practice on Thursday. He appears good to go.
“Jordie is back and feels a lot better, so he’ll be available to us,” Ruff said.
