What an impressive win Saturday night in St Louis. If you can figure out why they look so good on the road and so hapless at home so far, please bounce your theories off of me.
Remember that St Louis seems to have a youth and speed advantage that has given the Stars real trouble as of late, so to see the Stars roll in there at the end of a road trip and take the Blues apart is nice news.
Brad Richards-James-Neal-Loui Eriksson were the lead line, although Ribeiro-Morrow-Benn weren't too shabby themselves. Now that the top 6 are all in there places, we see that the Stars continue to bang home 4 per on the road. I don't care who you are, if you are scoring 4 a night on the road, you are going to continue to pile up points.
So, now, with points in 9 of 11, we are allowed to wonder about the upside of this team. I think LA is better. Phoenix is Phoenix. Anaheim is worse. And San Jose is really, really good. Can the Stars finish 2nd? Can they push the Sharks for 1st? I am pondering it, and checking the schedule for the first meeting with Los Tiburones. Nov 12th, by the way, out in San Jose.
Now, about Mr. Ott; I must say that he made me cringe a few times last night with what appeared to be dive bombs in the vicinity of the knees of St Louis players. I love tough, abrasive hockey, but I could live without anyone blowing a knee on a low hit. You know, he goes for those knees, then they are going after Richard's or Ribeiro's. We won't appreciate it when that happens. On the other hand, we need him on that wall. The Stars play noticeably better and with more emotion when he is stirring up the opponents. So, how do we reconcile what he does with how he does it? Not sure. But, this team needs him to be who he is. And for him to be what he can be, he has to be on that edge. And, as we all know, he can occasionally step over the edge.
Anyway, good to see solid hockey being played. Here come the Toronto Maple Leafs and their 0-7-1 record. I cannot stress how much I would love to see a positive home effort. 60 minutes of good Stars' Hockey on Wednesday would be tremedous.
