Stars Also Sign Free Agent Defenseman Mario Scalzo to Three-Year Contract

FRISCO, Tex. -- Dallas Stars General Manager Doug Armstrong announced today that right wing Junior Lessard has accepted the club's one-year qualifying offer for 2005-06. The club has also signed free agent defenseman Mario Scalzo to a three-year contract. Per club policy, no financial terms were disclosed.

"Junior was the best collegiate player in the nation two seasons ago and we look forward to his continued development with us," said Armstrong. "Mario Scalzo has just begun to tap into his potential and should provide solid depth for the organization."

Lessard, 25, played in 71 games for the Houston Aeros of the American Hockey League in 2004-05, posting 22 points (11 goals and 11 assists) and 25 penalty minutes. The 6-0, 200 lb. right wing won the 2004 Hobey Baker Memorial Award as the nation's top collegiate player after scoring 63 points (32 goals and 31 assists) in 45 games for Minnesota-Duluth.

As a senior at UMD in 2004, Lessard led the school to its first Frozen Four appearance since 1985, and was the national leader in both goals and points. He was selected to the American Hockey Association first team, the All-America first team and was named both the and National Player of the Year. The native of Ste. Joseph de Beauce, Que., posted 74 goals and 68 assists for 142 points in 160 games as a collegian, and signed as a free agent with Dallas on April 15, 2004.

Scalzo, 20, split the 2004-05 season between Victoriaville and Rimouski of the Quebec Major Hockey League, tallying 74 points (24 goals and 50 assists) and 104 penalty minutes in 62 total games. In 13 playoff games with Rimouski, as a teammate of Sidney Crosby, he registered seven goals and 14 assists for 21 points and 10 penalty minutes. The native of Ste. Hubert, Que., notched 143 points (37 goals and 106 assists) and 320 penalty minutes in 180 appearances for Victoriaville since the 2001-02 season.
