Stars-Sharks Notes

by Mark Stepneski / Dallas Stars

Wednesday’s overtime loss to San Jose gave the Stars a 1-6 record in games that have been settled in four-on-four overtime this season. In a tight playoff race, those are some valuable points left on the table.

“It’s something we talked about right after the game. That’s an area we have to improve in. It’s not good enough,” said Stars coach Lindy Ruff. “Those extra points are there. We lost coverage again on the goal and they made us pay for it.”

The Stars lost Wednesday in San Jose when Sharks forward Tommy Wingels got open in the front of the Dallas net, took a pass and scored from close range.

“I think for the most part, we look at some of our losses, they’ve been coverage situations,” said Ruff. “Some of them have been penalty kill situations, 4-on-3 in overtime, but the majority have been coverage where we haven’t read our coverage and that’s exactly what this one was tonight.”

The Stars are 3-4 in shootouts this season, giving them a 4-10 record in games that have been settled beyond regulation this season.
