Dallas Stars General Manager Doug Armstrong announced today that the club has placed center Mike Modano on the National Hockey League's injured reserve retroactive to Jan. 2.
Modano, 33, has missed the past three games with a groin injury suffered on Jan. 2 vs. Phoenix and will not accompany the team at the beginning of their five-game road trip next week. He will be re-evaluated next week. In 40 games this season, Modano has registered eight goals and 17 assists for 25 points with 40 penalty minutes. Posting assists in six of his last seven games played (2-6-8), he currently ranks tied for second on the team in assists (17), tied for third in points (25) and power play goals (3) and fourth in goals (8).
The 6-3, 205-pound center is the Stars' all-time leader in goals (452), assists (635), points (1,087), games played (1,065), game-winning goals (71) and shorthanded goals (27). Modano is one of two U.S. born players to record 400 goals and 600 assists over a career (also Jeremy Roenick) and is the only NHL player to lead his team in assists and points for the past five seasons (1998-2003).
The Stars (18-17-8-0, 44 pts.) will host the Colorado Avalanche tomorrow (noon CST, ABC) before embarking on a five-game road trip to San Jose (Jan. 13), Colorado (Jan. 15), Calgary (Jan. 17), Vancouver (Jan. 19) and Edmonton (Jan. 20).
