Stars go with young lineup in preseason opener at Florida

by Mark Stepneski / Dallas Stars

Jack Campbell and Philippe Desrosiers will be the goaltenders for the Dallas Stars tonight as they open preseason play against the Florida Panthers at BB&T Center in Sunrise, Florida. Campbell and Desrosiers will be among several young players in the Dallas lineup tonight.

“I am mainly looking at our young guys and what they are going to do in the game,” said Stars coach Lindy Ruff. “I want to see where they are at against a Florida team that is going to have their share of young guys too.”

Campbell and Desrosiers both have played well in the camp scrimmages, and now with preseason play underway the Stars can get a look at how the two look in game situations.

“I think it is important to see where those guys are at,” Ruff said. “You get an indication watching practices and some of these scrimmages, but to get them in some game situations and how they can react under the gun is the best way to evaluate them.”

Campbell, Dallas’ first-round pick in the 2011 NHL Draft, is expected to be the No. 1 goaltender with the Texas Stars of the AHL this season.

“It’s a great opportunity,” Campbell said of tonight’s game in Florida. “I’ve put a lot of work in this summer and made some big changes to my game. The first intrasquad games I was really focused on that, so tonight I am just going to go out and play. I am pretty confident in the changes.”

The big change for Campbell is more patience in goal.

“Allowing the rush to come before I start challenging out,” Campbell said. “That’s why if you looked at my game the past couple years I always look out of position. Now, I am a lot more patient and never out of position, hopefully not that much.”

Among the other young players in the lineup tonight: forwards Radek Faksa, Jason Dickinson, Devin Shore, Remi Elie, Gemel Smith and Mattias Janmark and defenseman Esa Lindell.

The NHL players in the lineup tonight: Tyler Seguin, Antoine Roussel, Valeri Nichushkin, Colton Sceviour, Curtis McKenzie, Jason Demers, John Klingberg, Jamie Oleksiak and Jyrki Jokipakka.

Injury notes

*Forward Patrick Eaves, who took a puck to the ribs in Monday’s scrimmage, was on the ice for Tuesday’s non-game group practice.

“Eaves was better than I thought,” coach Lindy Ruff said. “I didn’t think he would practice today, but he got on the ice, and it looks like he got through it okay.”

*Forward Travis Moen (knee) skated prior to this morning’s practice. He is close to joining the team for practices.

“He skated yesterday and today. Today was better than yesterday,” Ruff said. “I would assume that after tomorrow that he is pretty close to getting back in our practice group.”
