Stars-Devils Notes

by Mark Stepneski / Dallas Stars

Stars defenseman Sergei Gonchar was considered a strong contender to make Russian’s Olympic squad for the 2014 Sochi games, but he wasn’t on the 25-man roster released earlier this week.

That apparently doesn’t sit well with Russian hockey legend Slava Fetisov, who went to bat for Gonchar in an interview with a Russian news outlet.

“In this situation, I feel very sorry only for our experienced defenseman Sergei Gonchar,” Fetisov told R-Sport. “After all, our defensive line looks pretty young and Gonchar’s playing well in the NHL at the moment. I think that at such a fast-moving tournament [as the Olympics] his experience could be useful for the national team, especially on the power play.

“However, if the coaches have made that decision, I hope that they’ve made the right decision. Everyone understands the responsibility for the result.”

The 39-year-old Gonchar has played in every Olympics since 1998. If he had been selected to play at the 2014 Sochi games, he would have been the first man to play five times at the Olympics for Russia.
