Stars-Coyotes Notes

by Mark Stepneski / Dallas Stars

While Jamie Benn, Kari Lehtonen, Valeri Nichushkin and coach Lindy Ruff make their way to Sochi for the Olympics, the rest of the Stars will get a little break from hockey. But they’ll still have a focus on coming out of the break strong.

“I think everybody is going to take five or six days to enjoy themselves,” said Stars forward Ray Whitney. “Probably do some stuff you wouldn’t do during the season. Then it’s back to work. Although we’re not practicing, we’ll be training pretty hard that second week. Like Lindy was alluding to in the locker room it is very important that we come out of the break prepared to go because the team that stumbles coming out is probably the team that is going to miss the playoffs. We want to make sure we are ready to go and continue to play the way we have the last two or three weeks.”

Ruff said it is only natural to worry about how a lengthy break like this one can affect a team.

“I think every team worries about that,” Ruff said. “You talk to your players and remind them how hard it was to get to this point and that they’ve got to come out of the break and be one of the better teams. You’ve got about a week’s window there where you have two or three games where you’re guessing at what you’re going to get. You’ve got five practice days and we’ll try to get the team ready. Our group is pretty committed.”
