Dallas Stars General Manger Doug Armstrong announced today that the NHL club has claimed forward Blake Sloan off of NHL waivers from the Detroit Red Wings. Sloan is expected to join the Stars in California in time for Thursday's game at the Los Angeles Kings (9:30 p.m. CT, FSN). Sloan, 28, was recently signed by the Red Wings on December 1 after appearing in seven games for the Grand Rapids Griffins (AHL), where he registered four goals and two assists for six points with four penalty minutes and a +6 rating. The 5-10, 196-pound right wing also had two game-winning goals in that span. "Blake Sloan plays hard every night and brings NHL experience to our team," said Armstrong. "Obviously we are familiar with what he brings to the organization. He will add grit and character to our corps of forwards and we're excited to have him back." Sloan played parts of three seasons with the Stars (1999-2001), appearing in 114 games while accruing six goals and 15 assists for 21 points with 64 penalty minutes. He also played in 35 playoff games for Dallas, including back-to-back appearances in the Stanley Cup Finals with the Stars in 1999 and 2000. Never drafted, Sloan signed as a free agent with Dallas on March 10, 1999 from the Houston Aeros (AHL). He played under current Stars Head Coach Dave Tippett for parts of two seasons (1997-99) while in Houston. Sloan was claimed off of waivers by the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2001, and was later traded to Calgary in exchange for Jamie Allison in 2002. He has appeared in 262 career NHL games, scoring 11 goals and 32 assists for 43 points with 155 penalty minutes. The Park Ridge, Ill., native played collegially at Michigan from 1993-97, going to the NCAA Frozen Four Tournament in each of his last three seasons with the Wolverines (winning the NCAA Championship in 1996). Armstrong also announced that the team has assigned left wing Steve Gainey to the Utah Grizzlies -- Dallas' primary development affiliate in the American Hockey League. Gainey was recalled by Dallas on Nov. 17, 2003. He appeared in seven games with the Stars, going scoreless with a +1 rating and seven penalty minutes. Gainey, 24, has appeared in 12 games for Utah this season, scoring 3-1-4 points with nine penalty minutes.
