The Dallas Stars and Normandy Homes announced today that Stars captain Jamie Benn has won the Normandy Homes Star of the Year Award for the 2014-15 season. Benn was presented with the award in a post-game ceremony at American Airlines Center after the Stars defeated the Nashville Predators, 4-1 on Saturday. Normandy Homes will donate $1,000 to the Dallas Stars Foundation on his behalf.
Benn finished the season ranking first on the Stars in the Normandy Homes Three Stars of the Game voting with 59 total points. The captain earned eight first star selections, five second stars and four third stars during the 2014-15 regular season. Benn established new career-highs in goals, assists and points (35-52=87) during the 2014-15 campaign, leading the Stars in both assists and points. The Victoria, B.C. native has now won the award in back-to-back seasons as he also won the inaugural award in 2013-14.
Dallas goaltender Kari Lehtonen finished second in the Normandy Homes Three Stars of the Game voting this season, posting 54 total points on seven first star nominations, five second stars and four third stars. Lehtonen was named the winner of the Normandy Homes Three Stars of the Game voting for the second segment of the season, earning 19 total points in the voting with three first stars, one second star and one third star selections for the segment of games from Dec. 6 - Jan. 31. Stars forward Tyler Seguin came in third on the club in voting after finishing the regular-season with six first star selections, four second stars and seven third stars for a total of 49 points. Seguin won the first segment this season from Oct. 9 - Dec. 4, earning 24 points with three first stars, two second stars and three third stars over that span.
ABOUT THE NORMANDY HOMES STAR OF THE YEAR AWARD
The Normandy Homes Star of the Game Award is presented annually to the Stars player who earns the most points in the Three Stars of the Game voting, which occurs after each regular-season game. Members of the media in each home city select the Three Stars of the Game for each regular-season contest. A player receives five points for a First Star, three points for a Second Star and one point for a Third Star.
Each year, Normandy Homes will donate a total of $3,000 to the Dallas Stars Foundation on behalf of the winning Stars players. Over the course of the season there will be two segment winners and one overall winner, each having $1,000 donated in their name.
The trophy was designed by the collaborative efforts of Dallas Stars Chief Operating Officer Jason Farris and Jason Cain of Gemini LSV and is modeled after the Star Portal that the Stars pass through when entering the ice at the beginning of each game at American Airlines Center. The trophy is a 10:1 scale replica of the original Star Portal, and was constructed by Gemini Light Sound Video, the same company that supplied the original. Made from aircraft-grade aluminum and acrylic materials, the trophy is also imbedded with green LED lights. The portal sits atop a metal base, which is also in the shape of a star. Individual nameplates for each winner of the award are fastened along the edges of the base. The Normandy Homes Star of the Game Award stands at 2-foot-2 and weighs 55 pounds, while the metal base measures roughly 29 inches point to point.
