Although the weather outside was far from frightful Monday, more than 700 people came out to ESPN’s Snow Day to celebrate the holidays with Dallas Stars Alumni Bob Bassen and Marty Turco.
Fans from across the Metroplex showed up to the House of Blues Dallas with unwrapped toys and donations for Toys for Tots and an opportunity to meet the Stars’ greats.
Bassen and Turco weren’t the only recognizable faces in the crowd last night. Santa Claus also got the invite, along with celebrities from the Cowboys, Mavericks and Rangers. They enjoyed an evening of mingling with fans and helping Toys for Tots provide new toys to kids who might not normally have something to open on Christmas morning.
At the Snow Day event, Marty Turco spoke live on 103.3 ESPN Dallas with Galloway and Company about his decision to return to Dallas and his involvement with the team. The former Stars goaltender expressed his pleasure in being involved with the Stars community and appreciation for the fans.
Many of the Alumni have expressed the same desires to help out their former squad and city. For Bassen, the charities that the Alumni Association supports are a true representation of what the organization stands for.
“It’s important to us to help charities like Toys for Tots and Strikes Against Cancer, all while supporting ESPN and the Stars,” said Bassen, Director of the Alumni Association.
Guests that attended the event were treated to something special that truly epitomized the reason for the season. Thirteen-year-old Geordon Cox, the founder of the Strikes Against Cancer foundation, presented a generous donation to the V-Foundation. An inspirational story, Cox began the cancer foundation in honor of his mom, Lisa Cox.
“It was good getting to meet Geordon,” Bassen said. “He sets a great example for all of us.”
At the end of the evening, the former Dallas Stars goaltending legend Turco drew the name of one lucky fan to go home with a signed number 35 jersey. Though his playing days are behind him, Turco is relishing his new role with the organization.
