Scouting defenseman Cameron Gaunce

by Mark Stepneski / Dallas Stars

Here are a couple of scouting reports on defenseman Cameron Gaunce, acquired Tuesday evening from Colorado in exchange for right wing Tomas Vincour.

Gaunce, a second round pick (50th overall) in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, has played the last three seasons for Lake Erie of the AHL. This season he has 11 points (1 goal, 10 assists) in 61 games. Gaunce, who is 6-1, 203 pounds, shoots left.

The Hockey News had him ranked tenth among Colorado prospects in its recently published Future Watch 2013.

Here’s what THN said about Gaunce:

Good leadership skills, stands up for teammates, plays an honest if unspectacular stay-at-home game.

Hockey Prospectus had Gaunce rated seventh among Avalanche prospects heading into this season. Here’s what Corey Pronman of Hockey Prospectus had to say about Gaunce:

The Good: Gaunce is a highly projectable defensive defender who plays a smart, simple game in his own end. He has an above-average physical game as he has pro-level strength and tends to use his body well. He also makes a good outlet pass.

The Bad: Gaunce’s skating could still use some work as his mechanics aren’t all that refined. He’s also not an offensive defender and is limited with what he can do with the puck although sometimes he tries to go beyond his means.

Projection: He could be a third pairing defender.
