Razor With an Edge: Go Kari Go

by Daryl "Razor" Reaugh / Dallas Stars

Do you want to know why this Stars team got into the Stanley Cup Playoffs?

Well, this might help. Here are Kari Lehtonen's final ten game stats over the past five seasons:

2009-10:

6-3-0

2.44

.923

2010-11:

4-4-2

2.56

.904

2011-12:

3-7-0

2.95

.907

2013:

3-5-1

2.80

.901

COMBINED

16-19-3

2.68

.911

2014

7-3-0

1.99

.935

Kari was clutch.

I can't help but wonder whether not getting that start in Philadelphia, after he had returned from concussion for the game prior in Pittsburgh - and was mediocre - might have motivated him to not assume he would be "the man" down the stretch?

Whether it did or not, The "Big Finn" was phenomenal. He played 11 games after that 5-1 loss to the Pens and went 8-3 with numbers slightly better than the gaudy ones stated above.

A little nugget to put on your mental nightstand on the eve of Stars-Ducks: Last year the Ducks were upset by the Red Wings in the opening round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs largely due to goalie Jimmy Howard's ability to hold Corey Perry goalless (and win in OT).

So with all that in mind, Kari's assignment here in Anaheim seems quite simple: continue to play like he did over the last month, and make Perry bow at his toe-laces.

Kari Lehtonen isn't just "The Big Finn" he's the "Big Key" - goalies always are in mid-April.
