Following Thursday night’s 6-1 win over Vancouver, Stars goaltender Kari Lehtonen talked about the team’s acquisition of goaltender Tim Thomas. Here are some of Lehtonen’s comments regarding Thomas.
On if he talked to Tim Thomas today
“He seems like a really nice guy. I am excited to see him in practice and in games. He’s invented a lot of goalie stuff the last few years, like sliding on your knees when the puck is behind the net and things like that, he has come up with it. I am excited to learn from him even more.”
On if Thomas being here will allow him to take a few more games off
“I am sure they brought him here for a reason, and as insurance too. We are going to keep going one game at a time. That’s fine with me. That’s how I live. I only focus for tonight’s game, we have one in the next couple days and that’s where my focus goes to when I get home. It’s been good to have him here and so far everything is top notch.”
On if the relationship with Thomas could be a competitive one
“You never know how it is going to turn out. Today was the first day that I saw him and it was kind of like the first day of training camp when you meet the other guy. It’s going to take time for me to know him as a goalie and as a person and the same the other way. We have to work together. It’s a different situation now and I think it was good for me to be in the Olympics with a couple guys (Tuukka Rask and Antti Niemi) who were pushing me. I think that is going to make this a little simpler.”
On if talked to Rask about Thomas (the two played together in Boston)
“He actually texted me right when I heard about it. I asked him if there is anything I need to know and he just said that (Thomas) is a great guy and that he likes Finnish people. He lived there for a few years and will know where I am coming from. That’s good.”
