Prospect Report

by Mark Stepneski / Dallas Stars

The Stars’ top two picks in the 2015 NHL Draft – Denis Gurianov and Roope Hintz - squared off in tournament play this past weekend. And defense prospect Alex Peters’ team was in the middle of quite a story in major junior hockey. Here’s the latest on Dallas prospects playing in Europe, juniors and college this season.

RW Denis Gurianov (first round/2015) and LW Roope Hintz (second round/2015) both played at the Four Nations U-20 Tournament in Finland over the weekend.

Hintz scored one goal in two games for Finland, tallying the game-winning goal with 9:30 left in the third period in a 3-2 win over Czech Republic on Friday. Gurianov had no points in two games for Russia.

Gurianov and Hintz did play against each other Saturday. Hintz had no points and four shots on goal and Gurianov had no points and two shots on goal as Finland defeated Russia, 2-0.

Finland won the tournament with a 3-0 record. Russia finished fourth among the four teams with a 1-2 record.

*The European leagues were on a break over the past week, so the other Dallas prospects playing in Sweden and Finland had the week off. League play resumes this week.

*D Alex Peters (third round/2014) did not play in any games over the past week. Peters is the captain of the Flint Firebirds, who were the center of quite a story Sunday evening into Monday. According to several media reports, Firebirds players threatened to quit after the team coaches were fired by the club’s owner following a win Sunday night. On Monday, after meetings involving team management, players and OHL officials, the coaches were re-instated and the situation appears to be heading towards a resolution, according to a statement released by the team’s owner Monday evening.

*G Brent Moran (fourth round/2014) won his only start of the week, stopping 25 of 26 shots as Niagara defeated Peterborough, 5-1, on Saturday. Moran has stopped 47 of 50 shots in in winning his last two starts. He is 4-5-0 with a 3.45 goals-against average.

*D Aaron Haydon (sixth round/2014) registered his first point of the season, picking up an assist in Niagara’s 5-4 win over Windsor Thursday. Haydon has one assist in 15 games.

*D Chris Martenet (fourth round/2015) played one game last week and did not register any points. Martenet had four assists and a plus-16 rating in 16 games for London this season. He is tied for fourth in the league in plus/minus rating.

*D Patrick Sanvido (seventh round/2014) remains out with a knee injury.

*LW Brett Pollock (second round/2014) registered four points (three goals, one assist) and a plus-six rating in three games for Edmonton over the past week. Pollock scored a goal in each of the three games, including two game-winners. Pollock has 18 points (7 goals, 11 assists) in 19 games this season and ranks second on the Oil Kings in scoring.

*D Michael Prapavessis (fourth round/2014) picked up one assist in two games over the weekend. He assisted on the game-tying goal as RPI rallied to defeat St. Lawrence, 4-3, in overtime on Saturday. Prapavessis, a sophomore, has four assists in nine games.

*D Joseph Cecconi (fifth round/2015) and the University of Michigan did not play over the past week.
