Dallas Stars defense prospect Chris Martenet (fourth round/2015) is on his way to the championship game at the 2016 Memorial Cup in Red Deer, Alberta.
Martenet’s London Knights – the Ontario Hockey League Champions – have won all three of their round-robin games at the tournament and outscored the opposition 20-5. London won 6-2 Friday over Red Deer, which is the host team. They defeated the Western Hockey League champion Brandon Wheat Kings, 9-1, on Monday and then defeated the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League champion Rouyn-Noranda Huskies, 5-2, on Tuesday.
The Knights have won 16 straight postseason games. Their last loss was April 1 in Game 5 of their first-round OHL playoff series against Owen Sound.
Martenet, who signed a three-year entry-level contract with Dallas last week, has no points, one shot on goal and a plus-three rating in three games at the Memorial Cup.
London’s opponent in Sunday’s championship game is still to be determined.
*Stars forward prospect Denis Gurianov (first round/2015) is among 48 U20 Russian players taking part in the Black Sea Cup in Sochi, Russia this weekend. The Russian players will be split into two teams and will play junior teams from Finland and Latvia. Gurianov, who signed an entry-level contract with Dallas earlier this month, had no points while playing on the top line in an exhibition game between the two Russian squads on Tuesday.
Gurianov registered five points (four goals, one assist) in 47 games with Lada Togliatti in the KHL this season. He recorded six points (four goals, two assists) in seven games in Russian juniors.
*LW Roope Hintz (second round/2015) registered 20 points (8 goals, 12 assists) in 33 games with HIFK in Finland’s top league. Missed the first part of the season due to injury. Recorded 6 points (2 goals, 4 assists) in 18 playoff games as HIFK advanced to the league championship series, losing in six games.
*D Niklas Hansson (third round/2013) finished the season with 22 points (7 goals, 15 assists) in 44 games for HV 71 in the Swedish Hockey League. He had no points in six playoff games. Signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Dallas Stars and joined the Texas Stars after signing an amateur tryout contract with the AHL club.
*D John Nyberg (sixth round/2014) Registered 9 points (1 goal, 8 assists) with Oskarshamn in Sweden’s second highest league. Played 6 games with Frolunda in the Swedish Hockey League, registering no points. Had no points in 5 playoff games in the second highest league and 3 assists in 3 playoff games for Frolunda in junior playoffs.
*D Aleksi Makela (seventh round/2013) played 42 games for Ilves in Finland’s top league, registering 2 assists. Recorded 2 assists in 11 games with LeKi in Finland’s second highest league. Played 7 playoff games in Finnish juniors, scoring one goal as Ilves won the championship in Finland’s top junior league.
*D Troy Vance (fifth round/2011) registered 19 points (3 goals, 16 assists) in 59 games with Assat in Finland’s top league.
*G Markus Ruusu (sixth round/2015) had a 3.09 goals-against average and .900 save percentage with JYP-Akatemia in Finland’s second highest league. Posted a 3.99 goals-against average and .886 save percentage with JYP in Finnish juniors. Signed an ATO with the Texas Stars and served as the third goaltender.
*G Henri Kiviaho (fifth round/2012) posted a 2.76 goals-against average and .903 save percentage in Finland’s top league. Had a 3.28 goals-against average and .889 save percentage with LeKi in Finland’s second highest league.
*D Miro Karjalainen (fifth round/2014) played 17 games in Finnish juniors, registering 7 points (1 goal, 6 assists) and 105 penalty minutes for HIFK. Played seven games in Finland’s second highest league, registering no points and seven playoff games in the second league, picking up two assists for Kiekko-Vantaa.
*D Michael Prapavessis (fourth round/2014) registered 18 points (4 goals, 14 assists) in 40 games with RPI in college hockey, leading the team in defenseman scoring.
*D Joseph Cecconi (fifth round/2015) registered 7 assists in 38 games in his freshman season at the University of Michigan.
*D Aaron Haydon (sixth round/2014) recorded 17 points (5 goals, 12 assists) and a plus-22 ratings in 65 games for Niagara of the Ontario Hockey League. Picked up 4 points (2 goals, 2 assists) in 17 playoff games as Niagara advanced to the OHL championship series.
*D Patrick Sanvido (seventh round/2014) registered 10 points (1 goal, 9 assists) in 49 games for Windsor of the Ontario Hockey League. Picked up 1 assist in 5 playoff games.
*D Alex Peters (third round/2014) recorded 12 points (1 goal, 11 assists) in 55 games with Flint of the Ontario Hockey League.
*G Brent Moran (fourth round/2014) played for both Niagara and Flint in the Ontario Hockey League, posting a 13-25-4 record, 3.86 goals-against average and .881 save percentage.
