Dallas Stars first-round pick Denis Gurianov is coming to North America for a little more than a week with Russia’s national junior team to play games against Canada and Czech Republic.
The games coincide with Canada’s National Junior Team Summer Development Camp, which gets underway this weekend in Calgary. Russia plays Czech Republic on August 2 and August 8 and Canada on August 3 and August 5.
Russia began its summer development camp outside Moscow last week with 28 players and headed to Canada on Thursday after trimming the roster down to 22. Gurianov, who scored two goals in a camp scrimmage on Monday, is one of 12 forwards on the roster.
The camps are part of the process in selecting rosters for the 2016 World Junior Championship, which will be held in Finland from Dec. 26 to Jan. 5.
The 18-year-old Gurianov has played 33 games for Russia in international play the past two seasons, registering 29 points (23 goals, 6 assists). He had a strong showing at the 2015 U-18 World Junior Championship, picking up 7 points (6 goals, 1 assist) in 5 games. He was selected as one of Russia’s top three players at the tournament.
The Stars selected Gurianov with the 12th overall pick in this summer’s NHL Draft. He is expected to play in the KHL this season. He began workouts with his KHL club, Lada Togliatti, in early July.
Here’s Russia’s game schedule for the coming week. The two games against Canada will be broadcast by TSN in Canada.
Sun. Aug. 2, vs. Czech Republic, 8 p.m. (CDT)
Mon. Aug. 3, vs. Canada, 9 p.m. (CDT)
Wed. Aug. 5, vs. Canada, 9 p.m. (CDT)
Sat. Aug. 8, vs. Czech Republic, 8 p.m. (CDT)
Hintz misses Finland’s World Juniors camp
Forward Roope Hintz, the Stars’ second-round pick (49th overall) in this summer’s draft, was expected to attend Finland’s World Junior summer camp but missed it due to injury. Hintz was on the original roster for the camp, which included a trip to North America for games this coming week. The injury is the same one that kept him out of Dallas’ development camp in early July.
The 18-year-old Hintz played for Finland at the 2015 World Junior Championship in Canada, registering two assists in five games.
Finland’s national junior team is traveling to Lake Placid, New York, where it will play games against the United States and Sweden as part of the USA Hockey National Junior Evaluation Camp.
