by Travis Betts / Dallas Stars

We take another look at the Stars’ prospects in minor league, college, junior and European hockey leagues.

Texas Stars (AHL):
Lindgren

The Texas Stars scored three goals in the third period Friday to beat the Houston Aeros 5-2. Luke Gazdic, Warren Peters, Perttu Lindgren and Aaron Gagnon scored for the Stars, who became just the second team in the Western Conference to reach 20 wins. Gazdic, in his first game back after his call-up from Idaho, also dropped the gloves with Houston’s Matt Kassian in the first period. Matt Climie made 27 saves on 29 shots for his ninth win of the season.

Saturday, Texas fell to the Grand Rapids Griffins 4-2 at the Cedar Park Center. Andrew Hutchinson scored a power-play goal and Gagnon added two power-play assists, but the Griffins scored three goals in the final period for the comeback win. Climie made 16 saves on 19 shots, dropping to 9-8-2.

The Stars are in the middle of seven consecutive days off, the team’s longest stretch without a game this season. Their next game will be Sunday afternoon at San Antonio, followed by a home matchup Tuesday against Syracuse and an afternoon game at Manitoba on New Year’s Eve.

Noteworthy:
The Stars are 20-9-4 on the season, good for 44 points and first place in the Western Conference. The Milwaukee Admirals and Peoria Rivermen are tied for second in the West Division with 37 points.

The Stars’ defense and goaltending continues to rank near the top of the league; Texas is second in the conference with 71 goals allowed in 33 games.

Though much of the focus this season has been on the defensive success, the Stars have gotten it done offensively too; the Stars are tied for fourth in the conference with 93 goals. Gagnon, Texas’ leading scorer with 21 points (6-15-21), is tied for 44th in league scoring.

Last Thursday, Texas recalled left wing Luke Gazdic from the Idaho Steelheads. Gazdic scored a goal and an assist to go along with 10 penalty minutes and a +4 rating in his four-game stint with Idaho. Saturday, Texas recalled defenseman Trevor Ludwig after one game in Idaho. Ludwig has one goal, five assists and 24 penalty minutes in 14 games this season with the Steelheads.

Idaho finished up its six-game homestand 4-1-1, and will play at Utah on Saturday and at Las Vegas next Tuesday in the 7th Annual Midnight Holiday Roundup, a game scheduled to start at 11:59 p.m. Pacific time.

Center Scott Winkler, who plays for Colorado College, represented Team Norway at the 2010 World Juniors Division 1, Group B tournament in Poland last week. Winkler led all players with 14 points (5-9-14) in five games, including a two-goal, six-assist performance in Norway’s 18-2 win against Croatia. Winkler was named best forward of the tournament.

Defensemen Jordie Benn, the older brother of Dallas Stars’ left wing Jamie Benn, did not find the scoresheet this week in three games for the Allen Americans (CHL), but did record 14 shots on goal. Benn has three goals, four assists, and 39 penalty minutes in 20 games this season for Allen.
