DALLAS STARS PLACE JANNE NIINIMAA ON INJURED RESERVE
FRISCO, Tex. -- Dallas Stars General Manager Doug Armstrong announced today that the club has placed defenseman Janne Niinimaa on the injured reserve list retro-active to Jan. 20. He will miss the team's next two games against St. Louis tonight and at Colorado tomorrow.
Niinimaa, 30, was acquired by the Stars in a trade from the New York Islanders on Jan. 10, 2006. The Raahe, Finland native missed Dallas' last game against Phoenix with a sore ankle. He has appeared in 46 games with both New York and the Stars this season, posting one goal and 10 assists for 11 points with 70 penalty minutes. The 6-1, 220-pound defenseman collected his first point as a Dallas Star with an assist on Jan. 20 vs. Tampa Bay.
A member of the 1997 NHL All-Rookie Team, Niinimaa played in his only All-Star Game in 2001 while a member of the Edmonton Oilers. The two-time Olympian with Finland (1998, 2002) has appeared in 683 career games, recording 52 goals and 259 assists for 311 points with 681 penalty minutes.
