Mock drafts see several possible picks for Stars

by Mark Stepneski / Dallas Stars

Whose name will the Dallas Stars call with the 12th overall pick Friday night at the NHL Draft? Nobody knows. Even the Stars will have to wait to see who is available and then make their decision. But plenty of people have ideas. Here’s a look at what some mock drafts have the Stars doing with that 12th overall pick in round one.

Pavel Zacha, C, Sarnia (OHL): International Scouting Services 2015 Draft Guide

How ISS arrived there: (1) EDM: McDavid; (2) BUF: Eichel; (3) ARZ: Marner; (4) TOR: Crouse; (5) CAR: Hanifin; (6) NJD: Strome; (7) PHI: Provorov; (8) CBJ: Rantanen; (9) SJS: Barzal; (10) COL: Werenski; (11) FLA: Koncecny

What ISS said about Dallas taking Zacha at 12: “Dallas loves the size and skill down the middle to play in the tough Central Division; will play behind Tyler Seguin and Jason Spezza but will ultimately take over the second line duty.”

Timo Meier, RW, Halifax (QMJHL): Red Line Report 2015 Draft Guide

How Red Line arrived there: (1) EDM: McDavid; (2) BUF: Eichel; (3) ARZ: Strome; (4) TOR: Hanifin; (5) CAR: Marner; (6) NJD: Crouse; (7) PHI: Rantanen; (8) CBJ: Provorov; (9) SJS: Werenski; (10) COL: Zacha; (11) FLA: Connor

What Red Line said about Dallas taking Meier at 12: “He’s known as a bullish physical player with a strong offensive upside. Dramatically improved his on-ice vision while also scoring 44 goals this season. Safe pick will definitely play in the NHL.”

Denis Gurianov, RW, Lada Togliatti (MHL): Red Line Report 2015 Draft Guide

How Red Line arrived there: (1) EDM: McDavid; (2) BUF: Eichel; (3) ARZ: Hanifin; (4) TOR: Strome; (5) CAR: Marner; (6) NJD: Provorov; (7) PHI: Crouse; (8) CBJ: Zacha; (9) SJS: Werenski; (10) COL: Barzal; (11) FLA: Rantanen

What Red Line said about Dallas taking Gurianov at 12: “If his name was ‘Dennis Grant’ we’d be talking about a player pushing close to top-5 status, but the Russian factor drops him to the Stars. They got Valeri Nichushkin at #10 that way two years ago, and will be ecstatic if lightning strikes twice.”

Mathew Barzal, C, Seattle (WHL): McKeen’s Hockey 2015 NHL Draft Guide

How McKeen’s arrived there: (1) EDM: McDavid; (2) BUF: Eichel; (3) ARZ: Hanifin (4) TOR: Marner; (5) CAR: Provorov; (6) NJD: Strome; (7) PHI: Zacha; (8) CBJ: Rantanen; (9) SJS: Werenski; (10) COL: Crouse; (11) FLA: Conner

What McKeen’s said about Dallas taking Barzal at 12: “A nice replacement for Spezza in 2-3 years as a second-line center behind Seguin.. Barzal has the speed and vision to be an above-average playmaker once he bulks up sufficiently to handle NHL size.”

Mathew Barzal, C, Seattle (WHL): Future Considerations 2015 NHL Draft Guide

How Future Considerations arrived there: (1) EDM: McDavid; (2) BUF: Eichel; (3) ARZ: Marner; (4) TOR: Strome; (5) CAR: Hanifin; (6) NJD: Provorov; (7) PHI: Crouse; (8) CBJ: Rantanen; (9) SJS: Werenski; (10) COL: Connor; (11) FLA: Zacha

What Future Considerations said about the Stars taking Barzal at 12: “DRAFT NEEDS: They need goal scoring prospects on the wings, offensive centers and a puck rusher on the blue line. NOTES: The Stars add a potential playmaking center who they hope can play in their top six for years to come.”

Kyle Connor, C, Youngstown (USHL): The Hockey News

How The Hockey News arrived there: (1) EDM: McDavid; (2) BUF: Eichel; (3) ARZ: Strome; (4) TOR: Hanifin; (5) CAR: Marner; (6) NJD: Zacha; (7) PHI: Crouse; (8) CBJ: Werenski; (9) SJS: Barzal; (10) COL: Provorov; (11) FLA: Rantanen

What The Hockey News said about Dallas taking Connor at 12: “Here’s a pretty nice succession plan for Dallas: Spezza and Seguin are your top centers now, but a few years down the line it’s Seguin and Connor, who will hone his game at the University of Michigan.”

Travis Konecny, C, Ottawa (OHL): North American Central Scouting 2015 NHL Draft Guide

How NACS arrived there: (1) EDM: McDavid; (2) BUF: Eichel; (3) ARZ: Strome; (4) TOR: Marner; (5) CAR: Hanifin; (6) NJD: Crouse; (7) PHI: Zacha; (8) CBJ: Werenski; (9) SJS: Provorov; (10) COL: Rantanen; (11) FLA: Barzal

What Button said about Dallas taking Meier at 12: “The Swiss Marian Hossa.”

Mikko Rantanen, RW, TPS (Finland): Jeff Marek of Sportsnet
