The 2008 Classic BMW Dallas Stars Golf Classic was held on Monday at the prestigious Craig Ranch Golf Course in McKinney. Reviews were positive from all who participated, including most of the Dallas Stars players, coaching staff and front office, golfing to help raise money for the Dallas Stars Foundation.
All told, the Foundation raised over $100,000 to help the organization continue to have a positive impact on the North Texas community. The Dallas Stars Foundation annually gives grants to worthy children’s charities in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area, giving over $2.5 million since 1998.
“This is one of the Dallas Stars Foundation’s biggest fund-raising events of the year and we couldn’t be more thrilled with how this year’s tournament turned out,” said Carla Rosenberg, executive director of the Dallas Stars Foundation. “We couldn’t do it without the help of some great sponsors like Classic BMW and Craig Ranch. And of course our players and coaches were fabulous in taking time to come support our cause. We really appreciate everyone involved.”
The tournament kicked off with a fabulous party at Classic BMW in Plano on Sunday evening, with over 500 people in attendance for a fun evening of food, drink and music.
Monday’s tournament featured Sports Radio 1310 The Ticket’s Dunham & Miller Show broadcasting live on-site as the players enjoyed a hot breakfast before teeing off at 9 AM. A cold and windy day did not deter golfers from coming out and playing in the tournament.
Team captain Brenden Morrow
welcomed the sponsors, thanking them for their support of the Stars Foundation. The tournament also featured a cigar roller, which was a big hit. The Stars Ice Girls were out on the course taking photos with all of the four-somes, while supportive spouses Mandy Modano and Darcy Hull drove around greeting guests and selling mulligans.
“We’re having a great time,” Mandy said. “All of the golfers are so nice and it is fun to be out here helping a good cause with the Stars Foundation. I know Mike likes to play in this tournament and we both enjoy being involved.”
There were two hole-in-one opportunities to win a BMW, as well as a hole-in-one contest to win a flat screen TV from Starpower. While no one found the hole from the tee box, Head Coach Dave Tippett came the closest, dropping a shot about five feet from the pin on the par-three 15th hole. Modano landed his shot about nine feet from the 15th hole.
The tournament concluded with a fabulous lunch in the clubhouse. Ralph Strangis and Daryl Reaugh emceed, with remarks from Stars President Jeff Cogen and Classic BMW owner Eric Maas thanking the players for participating. Golf analyst and former pro David Feherty was the featured speaker and did not disappoint with his unique way of telling stories.
“Overall, it was just a great event,” said Rosenberg. “We’d like to thank Diageo, Ben E Keith, Advantage Golf, American Airlines and Starpower for their involvement.”
“The Craig Ranch staff was fabulous and very friendly. They have a big weekend next week as the Nationwide Tour comes through. The golf course is great and we are very thankful to have had the opportunity to hold our tournament here at Craig Ranch.”
