Dr Pepper StarCenter Plano is Bigger, Better Than Ever

by Staff Writer / Dallas Stars

The Dr Pepper StarCenter in Plano is getting recognition from the Plano Convention and Visitors Bureau! Below is a release they wrote about our upgrades.

"Great news for figure skating and ice hockey fans in Plano! Not only has the Dr. Pepper StarCenter-Plano re-opened…it is bigger and better than ever!

Since the July re-grand opening of the Dr. Pepper StarCenter-Plano, General Manager, Tom Hulsey, and his team have been hard at work re-inventing the typical ice rink business model. Simply repairing multiple sheets of ice and renovating off-ice areas were critical in getting the Plano facility back up and running, but DPSC-Plano, under the direction of Stars President, Jim Lites, has clearly stepped “out-of-the-box” in re-launching a facility that was once a big part of the exploding figure skating and ice hockey communities of north Texas.

In a bold move that eschews the typical pro-shop/skate school business model of conventional ice rink facilities, DPSC-Plano is partnering with Dr. W. Joe Ford, a highly-regarded sports medicine specialist and Brent Severyn, former NHL star and hockey skills coach. Dr. Ford is known for improving orthopedic protocols to improve performance and speed healing for athletes, amateur and professional alike. His experience in a wide array of sports employs a full spectrum of conservative (i.e. avoiding invasive surgeries) treatments including chiropractic, acupuncture, nutrition and exercise therapies. Dr. Ford takes pride in successfully treating the everyday fitness devotee as well as the world-class athlete.

Additionally, Hulsey has broadened the DPSC-Plano partnership with retired professional hockey star, Brent Severyn by establishing a public venue for Severyn Sports. Severyn , “The Enforcer”, was a member of the 1999 Dallas Stars Stanley Cup Championship team. And while his dimpled-chin-good looks and good-natured-“been there, done that”- insight have established him as a popular broadcast partner, he is also known in north Texas hockey circles as a gifted hockey skills coach and a talented life coach. Plano Stars Center has provided a venue that includes a gymnasium facility with tools to cross-train for improved athletic performance and general fitness and also classroom space for a hockey academy where kids can get their academic requirements met and find time for a great deal of hockey skills practice during the same “school day”.

The DPSC-Plano partnerships enable the Plano facility to expand outside the usual bounds of figure skating and hockey sessions or ice-rink-birthday parties into corporate training and team building activities. Apparently, more than one birthday-party-parent has asked to return another day with their corporate staff for the challenge of broom ball! This unique approach presents a creative array of revenue streams for the renovated facility and expects to be a great match for the highly driven, success-oriented Plano community.
