Dallas Stars General Manager Jim Nill announced today that forward Gemel Smith has been signed to a three-year, entry-level contract. Per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Smith, 20, registered a career-best 75 points (37-38=75) in 69 regular-season games during the 2013-14 regular season, splitting time between London and Owen Sound of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). Smith finished the regular season tied for sixth in the OHL in power play goals (15) and 16th in goals (37). Smith finished second on London, recording 12 points (3-9=12) and a +4 plus/minus rating in nine postseason OHL contests. In four seasons in the OHL, Smith has amassed 203 points (89-114=203) in 264 career regular-season contests.
The 5-foot-11, 192-pound native of Thornhill, Ontario was selected by Dallas in the fourth round (104th overall) of the 2012 NHL Draft.
