Prospect Report: Heiskanen, HIFK advance in Finnish League playoffs

The Stars defense prospect tallied five points in the team's first-round series win

Stars defense prospect Miro Heiskanen and HIFK have moved onto the second round of the playoffs in Finland's top league.

After losing two of the first three games of the best-of-seven series, HIFK won three straight games over JYP to take the series 4-2.

Heiskanen had one goal and two assists in those last three games, including one goal, one assist, and nine shots on goal as HIFK evened the series 2-2 with a 4-1 win last Monday. In Game 5, he played 33:32 and had eight shots as HIFK rallied from a 6-2 deficit and won 7-6 in overtime to take a 3-2 series lead.

Heiskanen, the Stars' first-round pick (third overall) in the 2017 NHL Draft, has five points (one goal, four assists) in six playoff games and leads all players in the playoffs in ice time at 26:18 per game. He is tied for second in scoring among defensemen in the postseason, and his 41 shots are tied for second among all players.

HIFK plays Karpat in the next round starting Tuesday.

North American Juniors

LW Jason Robertson (2nd round/2017) scored six points (three goals, three assists) in three games as Kingston took Games 3, 4, and 5 to defeat North Bay, 4-1, in its first-round series in the Ontario Hockey League playoffs. Robertson has seven points (four goals, three assists) in five playoff games. Kingston plays Barrie in round two.

RW Nick Caamano (5th round/2016) tallied two goals and one assist in three games as Hamilton finished off Ottawa in the first round of the OHL playoffs, 4-1. Caamano has five points (two goals, three assists) in five playoff games. Hamilton plays Niagara in the second round.

C Liam Hawel (4th round/2017) picked up five points (three goals, two assists) in four playoff games over the past week but Guelph was eliminated by Kitchener in the first round of the OHL playoffs, 4-2. Hawel finished the postseason with six points (three goals, three assists) in six games.

D Ondrej Vala (Free agent/2016) recorded one goal and one assist in three games as Everett moved onto the second round of the Western Hockey League playoffs with a 4-1 first-round series win over Seattle. Vala has two points (one goal, one assist) and a plus-six rating in five playoff games.

Europe

D John Nyberg (6th round/2014) had no points in two games last week as Frolunda was eliminated in the Swedish Hockey League playoffs by Malmo, 4-2. Nyberg finished the playoffs with two assists in six games. He is scheduled to join Sweden's national team for games against Slovakia Thursday and Friday.

D Jakob Stenqvist (6th round/2016) headed to Swedish juniors after wrapping up postseason play in Sweden's second league. He played for Frolunda in the junior playoffs, scoring two goals in two games for Frolunda which was eliminated in the quarterfinals.

LW Riley Tufte (1st round/2016) and Minnesota Duluth play Ohio State Thursday in one national semifinal at the NCAA Frozen Four Thursday in St. Paul. Tufte has 29 points (16 goals, 13 assists) in 40 games.

Season Finished

Here's a brief recap of the prospects who have concluded their seasons in college, juniors and Europe.

G Jake Oettinger (1st round/2017) finished his sophomore season at Boston University with a 21-13-4 record, 2.45 goals, against average and .915 save percentage. Oettinger tied for fifth in the nation with five shutouts.

G Colton Point (5th round/2016) finished his sophomore season at Colgate with a 16-12-5 record and ranked second in the nation in both goals against average (1.74) and save percentage (.944). His six shutouts ranked fourth.

C/LW Rhett Gardner (4th round/2016) tallied 20 points (7 goals, 13 assists) in 33 games with North Dakota. Gardner, a junior, won 58.6 percent of his faceoffs (459 of 783).

D Michael Prapavessis (4th round/2014) finished his senior season with 19 assists in 37 games for RPI. He signed an amateur tryout contract with Cincinnati of the ECHL where he has picked up one assist in nine games.

C Brett Davis (6th round/2017) finished the regular season with 58 points (25 goals, 33 assists) in 72 games for Kootenay of the WHL, tying for second on the team in goals and ranking third in points.
