The Stars made it interesting in the final minutes of regulation but lost 4-2 to the New York Islanders at UBS Arena on Saturday.
The loss, Dallas' fourth in its past five games, came against a New York team that entered the afternoon affair with a 25-24-9 record. It was another opportunity wasted for a Stars team that remains outside the playoff picture. Though they still sit just one point out of the second wild card, the Stars aren't taking advantage of their games in hand.

Jacob Peterson was one of the few bright spots in the game, finishing with a goal and two points for the first multi-point game of his NHL career. His goal trimmed a 3-1 deficit to 3-2, and he nearly tied it in the final minutes if not for a strong save from Islanders goalie Semyon Varlamov (37 saves).

Denis Gurianov scored the other goal for Dallas, a one-timer off a 2-on-1 rush with Peterson that evened the score 1-1 late in the middle frame.

Jake Oettinger took the loss in a 21-save effort.
Brock Nelson scored all three of his goals in the third period, pushing his team-leading total to 27.
The Stars will look to salvage their four-game road trip on Sunday against the Washington Capitals.
