Each year, the Dallas Stars Ice Girls have a photo shoot for the upcoming year’s calendar. As a rookie last year, it was my first ever calendar shoot and I was very excited and nervous at the same time. Not knowing exactly what to expect, it seemed that preparation was the key to a successful photo and my veteran year was no exception. Before this big day even arrives, each Ice Girl puts in plenty of time and preparation in order to get ready. This includes staying fit, eating healthy, having our hair and nails freshly done, as well as getting a nice tan glow- not to mention finding the perfect pair of shoes and jewelry to match our swimsuits! Luckily, thanks to our wonderful sponsors, each of these things is made accessible to us.
This long, fun-filled day begins before sunrise and doesn’t end until after sunset over a period of three days. Groups of two or three girls arrived in shifts starting at 6:00 a.m. until around 1:30 p.m. to get our hair and make-up done. Once ready, we all start to help each other decide which accessories match best with our individual swimsuits. Needless to say, there is an unlimited amount of borrowing between Ice Girls during this process and throughout the duration of the day.
The actual shooting process for each girl could take anywhere from 45 minutes up to an hour and a half depending on factors such as location, lighting and weather. This is the time where we can just relax, have fun and think about all the hard work we’ve put in preparing for this very day. Once our individual shooting time is over with, we have free time to enjoy with our teammates. After each group is finished shooting, we ended the day with a few group shots.
I can honestly say that this year’s calendar shoot was everything I thought it would be and more. Even the time spent not shooting was very memorable bonding time with my sisters that I will never forget. From acting silly and taking goofy pictures to telling jokes and stories about each other, I think I can speak for my entire team when I say we had so much fun together. It has definitely been one of my favorite memories as an Ice Girl so far.
