Dallas Stars General Manager Jim Nill concluded the 2015 NHL Draft held at BB&T Center in Sunrise, Florida by selecting five players and acquiring the negotiating rights to goaltender Antti Niemi from the San Jose Sharks in exchange for a seventh round selection in the 2015 NHL Draft. Below is a review of all the selections from the two-day draft.
Denis Gurianov - Right Wing (First Round, 12th Overall)
Gurianov, 18, spent the 2014-15 season with the HC Lada Togliatti organization, splitting it between their KHL and MHL (junior) teams. At the KHL level, he appeared in eight games, posting one assist. In the MHL, he posted 25 points (15-10=25) and 39 penalty minutes in 23 games. In the playoffs at the junior level, the left-handed right wing registered four points (3-1=4) in four games.
The 6-foot-3, 190-pound native of Togliatti, Russia represented his country at the U-18 World Junior Championship, posting seven points (6-1=7) and being named one of the Top 3 players on his team at the tournament.
Roope Hintz - Left Wing (Second Round, 49th Overall)
Hintz, 18, posted 17 points (5-12=17) in 42 games for Ilves of the Finnish Elite League. The youngest player on their roster, he finished eighth on the team in points and seventh in assists. He did not record a point in two postseason games. The 6-foot-3, 191-pound native of Tampere, Finland represented his country at the World Junior Championship and posted two points (0-2=2) in five games.
Chris Martenet - Defenseman (Fourth Round, 103rd Overall)
Martenet, 18, posted 16 points (7-9=16) in 64 games for London of the Ontario Hockey League this season. His seven goals were tied for second-most amongst team defensemen. The 6-foot-7, 198-pound blueliner was born in Waukesha, Wisconsin and raised in St. Louis, Missouri and appeared in ten postseason games for London.
Joe Cecconi - Defenseman (Fifth Round, 133rd Overall)
Cecconi, 18, appeared in 58 games for Muskegon of the USHL posting 15 points (2-13=15) and 35 penalty minutes in 2014-15. The 6-foot-2, 209-pound native of Youngstown, New York represented the United States at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament this past season and appeared in five games registering four penalty minutes. He is slated to attend the University of Michigan in 2015-16.
Markus Ruusu - Goaltender (Sixth Round, 163rd overall)
Ruusu, 17, split the season playing for the junior teams of JYP in Finland. He appeared in 34 games at the U-18 level with a .920 save percentage. The 6-foor-2, 174-pound netminder posted a 2.96 goals against average and a .918 save percentage in 12 games at the U-20 level.
