Dallas Stars General Manager Jim Nill announced today that the club has acquired defenseman Mattias Backman, center Mattias Janmark and a second-round selection in the 2015 NHL Draft from Detroit in exchange for left wing Erik Cole and a conditional third-round selection in the 2015 NHL Draft.
Backman, 22, has split the 2014-15 season between Grand Rapids in the American Hockey League (AHL) and Linkoping of the Swedish Hockey League (SHL). The defenseman opened the season with Grand Rapids, posting four points (0-4=4), 22 shots and six penalty minutes in 18 AHL games before being loaned to Linkoping. Backman has skated in 23 SHL games with Linkoping and ranks second among club defenseman with 16 points (4-12=16) this season.
The native of Linkoping, Sweden has appeared in 20 career regular-season AHL contests with Grand Rapids, recording four points (0-4=4) and 23 shots on goal. Backman has also appeared in 10 career Calder Cup Playoff games, earning six points (1-5=6), all with Grand Rapids. The 6-foot-3, 176-pound defenseman was originally selected by Detroit in the fifth round (146th overall) of the 2011 NHL Draft.
Janmark, 22, has appeared in 53 games with Frolunda of the SHL this season, ranking second on the team with 36 points (13-23=36) and posting a +11 plus/minus rating. The Stockholm, Sweden native made his AHL debut in the 2013-14 campaign, skating in two regular-season games with Grand Rapids, and posting one point (0-1=1) in six Calder Cup Playoffs games.
The 6-foot-1, 190-pound center was originally selected by Detroit in the third round (79th overall) of the 2013 NHL Draft.
Cole, 36, has registered 33 points (18-15=33) and a +4 rating in 57 games with Dallas this season. The Oswego, New York native's 18 goals this season rank third on the Stars, while his 33 points rank fourth on the squad. Cole has appeared in 160 regular-season contests with Dallas, posting 69 points (40-29=69) and 44 penalty minutes over parts of three seasons with the club. The forward also skated in three postseason tilts with Dallas in the 2014 Stanley Cup Playoffs, recording two penalty minutes and two shots on goal.
Cole has registered 526 career points (262-264=526) in 881 regular-season games over 13 NHL seasons with Carolina, Edmonton, Montreal and Dallas. A member of the 2006 Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes, Cole has tallied 14 career postseason points (6-8=14) in 46 Stanley Cup Playoff contests. The 6-foot-2, 205-pound forward was originally selected by Carolina in the third round (71st overall) of the 1998 NHL Draft, and was acquired by Dallas via trade from Montreal on Feb. 26, 2013 in exchange for Michael Ryder and a third-round selection in the 2013 NHL Draft.
