DECA Gets a Peek Behind the Scenes of the Dallas Stars
Tuesday was an extra special day for marketing students from numerous high schools in the area. Besides watching an exciting Stars game that night, these students had the opportunity to interact with Dallas Stars front office staff the afternoon before the game. DECA is a High School organization that is focused on students with an interest in hospitality, finance, sales and service, sports and entertainment, business administration and/or entrepreneurship.
Students had the opportunity to meet, learn, and ask questions from some of the Dallas Stars personnel. They met with several departments throughout the day including Corporate Sales, Communications / PR, Marketing, Merchandising, Community Marketing and New Business Development. The afternoon program is intended to show students the different things professional sports teams do to make the game experience enjoyable and memorable for fans.
In addition to meeting with various Front Office personnel, they also received a tour of the American Airlines Center and a glimpse into a finished Victory Park (the developmental area south of the arena). Perhaps the most enjoyable moment for the hockey fans was their getting to meet Dallas Stars alumni, Brett Hull. John Higgins coordinates the program for the Stars and has been heavily involved with DECA since the inception of the partnership. "This is an annual program that gives students fantastic insight to the sports industry outside of what they see on the ice," Higgins said. "It allows them to interact directly with the front office people who make possible everything leading up to and during the game. We expect this to be a meaningful event for these students and allow them to use this experience to help build a successful career in the future."
