Wishart Named To Team Canada For Super Series vs. Russia

by Staff Writer / San Jose Sharks
SAN JOSE -- Hockey Canada, in partnership with the Canadian Hockey League (CHL), announced on June 20 that Sharks 2006 first round selection defenseman Ty Wishart has been named to its roster of 26, junior-aged players (born in 1988 or later) that will represent Canada at the Canada/Russia Super Series.

"Ty (Wishart) deserves to be there," said Sharks Executive Vice President and General Manager Doug Wilson. "He has earned it. Head Coach Drew Schoneck and the Prince George hockey staff put him in a great situation to develop and mature this season. It will be a great experience for him."

The Canada/Russia Super Series, a one-time, eight-game series featuring the best Under-20 players from Canada and Russia, will take place from August 27th to September 9th, with the first four games to be held in Russia, and the final four to be held in Canadian cities (Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Red Deer and Vancouver).

Canada’s 26-player roster will gather in Toronto on Aug. 20 before traveling to Russia for the first four games which begin on Aug. 27, and then returning to their club teams and/or NHL training camps upon conclusion of the final game of the series on Sept. 9. The Canada/Russia Super Series will also serve to evaluate and develop Canada’s National Junior Team for the 2008 IIHF World Junior Championship.

Canada’s 26-player roster consists of three (3) goaltenders, eight (8) defensemen and 15 forwards.

Wishart recently completed his third season with Prince George of the Western Hockey League. Along with Sharks 2005 first round selection forward Devin Setoguchi, he helped lead the Cougars to the WHL Western Conference Finals, where they were defeated by the Vancouver Giants. In 15 WHL playoff games, Wishart posted 11 points (3-8=11) good for fifth on the team and tops among all team defensemen. His +5 rating also led the team.

During the regular season, his 49 points (11-38=49) were sixth on the team and tied for tenth among all WHL defensemen. His +15 paced the team and his eight power play goals were fourth. Wishart was also named to the 2006-07 WHL Western Conference Second All-Star Team.

The six-foot-five, 205-pound defenseman was selected by San Jose in the first round (16th overall) of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft. He was signed by San Jose on March 30, 2007.
