SAN JOSE - The San Jose Sharks (@SanJoseSharks) announced today that center Joe Thornton has been selected as the Sharks Foundation (@SharksCare) "Sharks Player of the Month" for January.
Thornton led the Sharks in assists (13), points (15) and registered a 10-game point streak in the month of January. He currently ranks T-7th among all NHL skaters in assists (34) and is 16th in points (46). In addition, Thornton is averaging 0.65 assists per game (T-9th in the NHL) and has a plus/minus rating of +17 which ranks T-15th in the league.
Thornton recorded a point in 11 of the 12 games the Sharks played during the month, including four multi-point contests. The London, Ontario, native became the 33rd player in NHL history to reach the 1,300 point plateau in a 6-1 victory over Colorado on January 26th.
Established in the 1996-97 season, the Sharks Foundation "Sharks Player of the Month" program honors the Sharks player(s) who have contributed most to the team's success each month. The Sharks Player of the Month and Year award program has donated more than $300,000 to the Sharks Foundation since the program's inception.
This is the 12th player of the month recognition for Thornton.
