by Staff Writer / San Jose Sharks
Sharks players Doug Murray, Patrick Rissmiller, Matt Carle, Ryane Clowe and Marc-Edouard Vlasic rolled up their sleeves on Dec. 8 to help dole out more than 20,000 pounds of frozen Tyson chicken as the team partnered with Lift Up America to help bring the gift of food to the Bay Area’s less fortunate this Holiday season.  A series of more than 30 Lift Up America events will occur in major cities across the nation during the week of December 3, 2006 with Lift Up America partners Tyson Foods, Give the Gift of Sight (a Luxottica Group foundation), Starkey Hearing Foundation and Interstate Batteries.

“We are thrilled about the partnership and team spirit between these great organizations,” said Dave Hannah, CEO of Lift Up America.  “It is truly inspirational to see so many entities coming together with such a noble goal in mind.”
Members of the Sharks organization, including S.J. Sharkie, Dan Rusanowsky, Marty McSorley and the aforementioned players visited the CityTeam Family Services on 1297 North 13th Street in San Jose after practice to help in the distribution of food donations courtesy of Tyson Foods to local agencies.
“We are honored to join forces with these great partners to bring more awareness to the problem of childhood hunger in America,” stated John Tyson, chairman and CEO of Tyson Foods.  “We hope what we’re doing here inspires others to share their strengths and resources toward finding solutions for the challenges in America and around the world.”
This year the team consists of Tyson Foods, Give the Gift of Sight (a Luxottica Group foundation), Starkey Hearing Foundation and Interstate Batteries.  Tyson is bringing food donations (a total of 2.24 million meals) to many cities across America in the fight against hunger “Powered by Tyson™”.  The Give the Gift of Sight Foundation will administer eye exams helping more than 25,000 people by donating brand name prescription eyewear.  Starkey Hearing Foundation has allocated thousands of their latest digital hearing aids for this project across the country, with a retail value of more than $25 million.  Interstate Batteries will donate $500,000 (retail value) in alkaline batteries and children will be given the opportunity to participate in the Interstate Batteries Fundraising Program to help raise funds for education and their local supporting agencies.
