The Best Games from the 2011-12 Season

by Staff Writer / San Jose Sharks

The "Best Of 2011-12" is a weekly feature of the best moments from this past Sharks season. Here is a compilation of some of the top games during the 2011-12 season. Check out the list and vote on which game you believe was the best from this past year.

10/8/2011 vs PHOENIX

Opening night went right for the Sharks to start 2011-12. Forward Joe Pavelski scored the team's first goal of the season, only to add another later in the game. Rookie forward Andrew Desjardins also scored twice, including the game-winner as the Sharks would win 6-3 over the division rival Coyotes.

10/21/2011 at NEW JERSEY

San Jose hit the road after suffering three straight losses early in the 2011-12 campaign. Their first stop was New Jersey, where they would face the Devils in Joe Thornton's 1,000th career NHL game. The captain got things going early, scoring the game's first goal. But, his most influential moment came with 32 seconds remaining when he found Joe Pavelski for the game-tying goal to send it to overtime. Forward Ryane Clowe finished things off in the shootout and got his team back in to the winning column.

10/29/2011 at NEW YORK

The Sharks would collect their fifth consecutive win (all on the road) thanks to a blistering Brent Burns wrister early in overtime against the Islanders. Pavelski's early goal, just 17 seconds in to the game failed to heavily tilt the momentum one way or the other. Each squad was able to answer until Burns sealed the game in the extra frame.

11/3/2011 vs PITTSBURGH

San Jose entered November beginning a long homestand with a powerful Penguins team. The first period did not go the way the Sharks wanted and they found themselves aiming to climb out of a two-goal deficit. Outscoring Pittsburgh 3-1 the rest of the way, San Jose found a way to make it a new contest. For the second time in three games, Ryane Clowe showed off his skills in the shootout to secure the win.

12/15/2011 vs COLORADO

Just days removed from a loss in Colorado, the Sharks sought revenge on the second leg of a home-and-home. Down 4-2 to start the third period, Brent Burns, Joe Pavelski and Logan Couture scored over a 4:29 span to thrill the home crowd with a comeback victory.

1/2/2012 at VANCOUVER

After becoming playoff foes the previous season, San Jose and Vancouver continued their heavy competition to some intense contests in 2011-12. The Sharks found the winning touch to start the new calendar year. A strong second period gave San Jose a slim lead, but inevitably the two would skate on to a shootout after Vancouver tied it in the third. Michal Handzus' attempt provided the winner and the Sharks defeated the Canucks 3-2 in a shootout.

2/10/2012 vs CHICAGO

San Jose had to repeatedly fend off a feisty Chicago squad to pull out a 5-3 win in February. Both teams matched intensity through the night for a thrilling game that saw two fights and 46 combined penalty minutes. In the end, it was a Benn Ferriero third period goal that provided the edge.

3/17/2012 vs DETROIT

The Sharks celebrated St. Patrick's Day in 2012 with some help by Marty Havlat, who had recently returned from a 39-game injury absence. Havlat scored two goals, the last coming as the winner in overtime, finishing on his own rebound after picking the puck up in traffic.

3/26/2012 vs COLORADO

In a key tilt against the Avalanche, San Jose assertively claimed a 5-1 victory. Joe Pavelski scored twice in the effort that also gave the Sharks the Pacific Division lead late in the race for the playoffs. The win also came at a time desperately needing to prevent the Colorado squad from jumping back in to the race themselves.

4/5/2012 at LOS ANGELES

With both the Kings and Sharks racing for a final playoff spot, the showdown in Los Angeles promised a great deal of excitement. Without any disappointment, the two teams played all the way to a shootout, with multiple lead changes throughout the game. Joe Thornton and Ryane Clowe each recorded the rare Gordie Howe Hatrick during the contest. Pavelski provided the winning goal in the shootout as the Sharks clinched a spot in the 2012 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
