Shortly after the events of September 11, 2001, Pat Tillman, a San Jose native and Leland High School graduate, placed his NFL career (Arizona Cardinals) on hold to become a U.S. Army Ranger. From 2002-2004, Tillman and his brother Kevin served tours in Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom and in Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom. On April 22, 2004, Tillman was killed while on duty in Afghanistan. The Pat Tillman Foundation was formed a short time later to honor Tillman’s contributions to the US and to carry forward his legacy of creating positive change in people.
