The Silver Stick Tournament features 68 teams and more than 1200 youth hockey players from nine different divisions (Mite, Squirt A, Squirt B, PeeWee A, PeeWee B, Bantam A, Bantam B, Midget 16U and Midget 18U) throughout California, Oregon and Arizona, with each team guaranteed at least four games before the championship game. The championship game determines the teams that will advance to the International Silver Stick Finals in January 2008.
Teams will take the ice on Wednesday, Nov. 21 at 4:45 p.m. and continue playing until 11:00 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 22 the teams will skate from 6:00 a.m. until 10:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 23 and Saturday, Nov. 24 the teams will face off from 6:00 a.m. to 11:45 p.m. The championship games will take place on Sunday, Nov. 25 from 6:45 a.m.-3:15 p.m.
Many of the teams participating in the Pacific Regional Silver Stick Tournament will also attend the Sharks game in groups on Nov. 24 vs. the Los Angeles Kings.
This is the third year Sharks Ice at San Jose and Sharks Ice at Fremont have hosted the Regional Qualifying tournament. This year Stanley’s Sports Bar is offering a Thanksgiving buffet, and food and beverage manager Rebecca Zwicker is expecting to feed around 500 people their turkey dinner.
Silver Stick International, Inc. has been around since 1958. It was started in Richmond, Ontario “to promote citizenship and International goodwill through the medium of Silver Stick Hockey and to foster sportsmanship through International competition for youth of all nations.”
Additionally, Silver Stick International, Inc. offers $1,000 scholarships to two American and two Canadian players each year. The scholarships can be applied towards post-secondary education. Applications will be available at the Silver Stick Tournament at Sharks Ice at San Jose and Sharks Ice at Fremont.
