On Nov. 12, the San Jose Sharks will host their first-ever "High School Sports Writers Day" at HP Pavilion at San Jose, providing San Jose high school journalism students or sports reporters working at their school newspaper an opportunity to cover a professional sports game and experience the life of a sports reporter.
The event begins at and runs through the conclusion of the game vs. the Dallas Stars, including post-game player access.
Each writer will have post-game access to a Sharks player and pre-game access to a member of the hockey staff, a meal in the press room, a visit with a local sports writer, a "behind-the-scenes" tour of the facility and the ability to watch the game with a press box view. Following the contest, the participants are required to write a feature story of their experience to be published in their school newspaper, with one winner selected to have his/her work published on SJSHARKS.com, the Sharks official website, as well as in Rink Report, the Sharks official monthly e-newsletter.The winning writer will also receive a Sharks prize package, including two (2) tickets to a future game.
Interested aspiring sports journalists were required to submit a 250-word essay on one of two topics:
1) What the experience would mean to you?
2) What is the significance of the Sharks to the City of San Jose?
Submissions for this inaugural event are no longer being accepted but additional events may be held in the future.
