When San Jose’s Mineta International Airport debuts its new terminal on Wednesday, there will be a distinct Sharks flavor in the air. A new bar and restaurant called the Sharks Cage will open and it is San Jose Sharks themed throughout. Top end televisions, along with action photos of the Sharks players adorn the bar that is accented with teal.
“We knew the airport was building a new terminal and they wanted restaurants and retails shops that had a lot of local flavor,” said Pat Vanducci of HMS Host. “The first thing we thought was what’s more emblematic of San Jose than the San Jose Sharks. We reached out to the Sharks marketing people and put together a deal to design a restaurant with the Sharks and our designers. It’s great to see it become a reality.”
For the Sharks, having their brand exposed to travelers from all over the world will be great, but showing it off in their backyard is a plus as well.
“HMS Host approached us because of their contract and they wanted to go to local companies that represented San Jose,” said Sharks Executive Vice President of Business Operations Malcolm Bordelon. “We were a natural fit for them. They’ve done this with a couple of other teams in other marketplaces. There will be millions of people over the years that will come to this airport. HMS has a great history of running great restaurants at airports around the nation.”
For the distinguished guests at the grand opening, players Torrey Mitchell
and Devin Setoguchi, along with broadcasters Dan Rusanowsky and Randy Hahn, were on hand to take some photos and sign autographs. The players were impressed with the airport sponsored endeavor.
“It’s really cool,” said Setoguchi. “It has teal countertops. It almost makes you feel like you’re in the dressing room. It’s pretty cool to see the murals on the wall. It’s about how the fans support the team and how we’re welcomed so much in the city of San Jose. Being able to be here for the support of the fans is the best feeling.” Pics
