SAN JOSE, CA - San Jose Sharks (@SanJoseSharks) General Manager Doug Wilson announced today that the club has signed defenseman Santeri Hatakka to a standard, three-year entry-level contract. Per club policy, the terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Hatakka spent the 2020-21 season with Ilves (Liiga) in the Finnish Elite League, where he posted seven points (one goal, six assists) and 34 penalty minutes in 44 games. He also appeared in five postseason games with Ilves, adding two penalty minutes.
Hatakka, 20, was also an assistant captain for Team Finland's bronze medal-winning World Junior Championships squad, where he had a strong performance, averaging nearly twenty minutes of ice time and posting two points (one goal, one assist) in seven games.
The defensive defenseman split the 2019-20 season with Ilves and Koove (Mestis). With Ilves, he appeared in 28 games, posting three points (one goal, two assists) and added 15 games with Koove, scoring seven points (two goals, five assists).
Internationally, Hatakka has represented Finland on multiple occasions, including in the 2020 (fourth) and 2021 (bronze medal) World Junior Championships, 2019 U-18 World Junior Championships and 2018 U-17 World Jr Championships. Also appeared in the 2019 U-20 Four Nations Tournament, where he was named the best defenseman.
The six-foot-one, 195-pound native of Riihimaki, Finland was originally selected by San Jose in the sixth round (184th overall) of the 2019 NHL Draft.
